Subsequent to enquiries being made by Audit into

the question of the payment of royalties and rent by a

transportation company, arrangements for payment have been

agreed to which, it is understood, were reported to the

Secretary of State by the Governor in his despatch No. 150

of 2nd July, 1948, and his savingram No. 859 of 16th

December, 1948. The Director of Audit states that the

company is apparently indebted to Government to the extent

of $1,637,998. 84, but that this sum will be paid before

the end of June, 1950.

11. With reference to paragraph 28 of my last Report, it

is understood that the Secretary of State, in his savingram

No. 770 of 6th August, 1948, directed that rent was payable

by the Services in respect of enemy property occupied by

them. The Director of Audit reports, however, that

requests by the Custodian of 'roperty have not so far

resulted in any payments being made.

12. With reference to paragraph 30 of my last Report, the

Director of Audit states that although some improvement was

apparent the condition of the stores accounting in the

Colony during the period under review was still generally

unsatisfactory. It is hoped, however, that the recent

issue of stores regulations to officers in charge of stores

accounts, and the introduction of improved stores records

where necessary will result in further and considerable

improvement.

13. The Special Board of Survey appointed to ascertain

the quantity and value of stores on hand at 1st April, 1947,

to which reference was made in paragraph 30 of my last

Report, has made its report; but the Director of Audit

states that, at the time of writing his Report, no inform-

ation had been received as to what action would be taken

on.
